Hmm, updated my header The Gimp did… (Say in Yoda Voice)

This post is to pay homage to the GIMP. If you have seen Pulp Fiction, you may have the WRONG idea!

G.I.M.P. – GNU Image Manipulation Program … Get your mind out of the gutter!

The GIMP is a free, open source image editor that holds it’s own in the graphic design world. It has been distributed for Linux for eons and in the more recent future, has been released for Windows and OS X. I remember playing with this software way back in the day when I used to mess around with Linux on spare computers and separate partitions on my main machine. I found it hard to use, but at the time, and even now, I’m no pro with Photoshop or Illustrator.

Last week I started fooling around with making my own post graphics and the first one was made with Paint.Net, which I now realize is good for photo editing, but not much else. Not having Photoshop or anything I decided to look up my old friend The GIMP. I remember reading about, downloading, and playing with the first version that was released for Windows a year or few ago. I liked it then, but had no use for it, therefore I didn’t spend any time getting to know the software.

I have to say, now that I have done a few things with it, I am really starting to like it. There is certainly a learning curve, but I am not much of an artist and despite this fact, I have been pretty happy with my first few post graphics and header images.

Maybe you own Photoshop, rendering this blog post useless, but for the rest of you, if you do ANY image editing or creation and want more control and a Photoshop “like” experience, give The GIMP a try.
