So I have to have a laptop for work. We determined today that the one I have would be suitable for someone else that needs it for a short time and for limited use. I, on the other hand, do all kinds of stuff. I program all kinds of systems, run AutoCad2007, and a few other non standard kind of things. So I am in the hunt for a laptop that will fit my needs…
Do you know how hard it is to find a lightweight laptop, that comes with XP Pro, and has a serial port? New tech with old tech just doesn’t come in the same package very often.
“My options are limited” is a bit of an understatement. Dell has me covered, but I have been considering giving HP or Lenovo a try. I talked to HP this afternoon and they are completely Serial port free so I had to scratch them off the list. Lenovo’s website is pretty poor in the info department, so I may have to actually use the phone to find out what I think I already know.
Anyway, I think it’s funny how behind the tech curve some companies can be. When I got the laptop I have now, I had to run windows 98 for a while until the software people caught up. The sad part is that XP has been out for a pretty long time and I bought the laptop 4 years ago. I suppose there is a part of me that is happy about using XP, it is nice and stable and whatnot, but I am not a Vista hater. I have had my issues with it, but am getting along with Vista fairly well @ home.
So it’s 2008 and I am in the market for a brand new laptop that has an OLD, soon to be unsupported, OS and even older hardware technology. Hardware that has been on computers since I have been using them…which is close to 15 years.
Lucky me…now if I can only find a laptop with a floppy drive I’ll really be in business!

Kamen – I’m going thru new desktops/laptops at work, and my new laptop (HP Compaq nc8430) has a serial port. No digital camera on me to show you… and I believe you’ve already bought the Dell but just FYI
